JOKERS AND ACES
ACE OF THE NOW (SPORTS, FOOTBALL AND FIFA)
The International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) recently awarded the hosting rights of the 2018 and 2022 world cup events to Russia and Qatar respectively.
In reaching these decisions, the central executive committee of the world football body led by its president Sepp Blatter, cited the successful hosting of the event by South Africa in 2010 and the need to engender an even development of the game, as the underlying reasons for the awards.

PHANTOMS, SPIRITS AND AN ELECTION
“Our quest for free and fair elections next year seems to have hit another rough patch!”
“What is the news?”
“Pieces of equipment-known as Direct Data Capturing machines (DCC) - needed by our electoral body, INEC, in conducting next year’s general elections, were reported stolen, after their arrival at the International Airport”
“That’s sad! One would think that equipment as critical as that should have been accorded priority attention”
“And to think that only recently, a princely sum was expended in upgrading security at the airports”
“Any how, security and other relevant agencies at the airport have been passing the buck!
“Typical but who could be behind this? There must be leads or clues, the police could follow!”
“I have important information to share. Do you promise not to tell?”
“In the name of all that is good.”
“A friend’s uncle knows the identities of the perpetrators!”
“What! You must be kidding! Was he at the scene of the crime? That either makes him an accomplice or a star witness”
“Relax my friend! He was in the comfort of his home. He possesses this knowledge with the aid of a device!”
“A device?”
“Known as the SPIRIT-O- METER. With it, he ascertained that the thieves came in as phantoms, waltzed their way through security with the DCC machines and disappeared into thin air!”
“This must be the ninth wonder of the world! So, can the Federal Authorities get to work with the evidence at this man’s disposal?”
“Yes, as a patriotic citizen, he wants the best for the country, especially as the elections draw near”
“Good, so we can bring the criminals to book”
“However he has certain demands!”
“Demands? I thought he wants to help?”
“Just listen! In addition to him being awarded the highest honours in the land, he wants to conduct next year’s general elections – on his own!”
“Conduct next year’s elections all on his own? If the first demand is a bit outlandish, the second must border on the insane! If I might ask, how does he, entirely on his own intend to conduct the voter’s registration exercise, the elections proper and other related tasks!”
“With the aid of the SPIRIT-O-METER; it is programmed to carry out multiple tasks”
“And if his requests are not granted, what happens?”
“He is an optimist and is prepared to wait!”
“These are exciting times we live in”
“And he plans to make them even more exciting!”

This poem is dedicated to a lady whose promptings actually propelled me to start blogging!So this is my way of saying a big THANK YOU to her!For certain reasons, i will not state her name here but i trust that when she does get to read this, she will be delighted! Take care, all!

Nigeria, her blood

“Nigeria is experiencing change and quite rapidly too”
“What do you mean?”
“I will ignore that question. And the institution behind this sweeping change is the judiciary”
“Oh you mean the court rulings that removed certain governors and installed others in their place!”
“Thank God you are through booting. I think the courts could win awards this year, but they sure are stirring up a lot of dust”
“And fear and possibly enemies, if I might add”
“To say the least, the fear of the courts is now the beginning of wisdom for our dear governors”
“But at least the true wishes of the electorate have prevailed”
“Even though some rulings came at the twilight of the tenures of some of the ousted governors!”
“Remember that the wheels of justice grind slowly but surely!”
“But I have a nagging fear”
“And what might that be?”
“It may embolden other classes of people to seek changes in the status quo, even if for the fun of it”
“I am lost. All that has happened is of a political nature.”
“…..that could fast spread to other facets of life. Wives could seek greater rights in marriages, children could agitate against corporal punishment and adult supervision, and the possibilities are endless!”
“Aha, I see. And I guess this has nothing to do with the demands for more money, made by your wife and supported by your kids”
“Do not insult me! What happened in my home has nothing to do with this!”
“Do not blow your top my friend! It is just that the writing is on the wall!”
“What writing?”
“That the time is up for those who steal power and authority and then go ahead to misuse or abuse it!”
“Implying…..?”
“…That your fears could come to pass and you could wake up one morning to a knock at your door only to welcome a man brandishing legal papers making him the substantive husband and father to your wife and kids”
“ You are insane! I am out of here.”

“Please tell me again what deal the Obasanjo presidency led by former finance minister Okonjo Iweala reach with the World Bank and other global financiers in 2006 or so?”
“I think in summary, it involved a cancellation of our debts after the country paid an agreed sum of eighteen billion dollars or so!”
“So in other words, we were to be given a clean slate”
“Yes”
“No more debt servicing payments”
“Yes”
“And did we actually make that part payment?”
“Yes we did-it was even reported in the papers”
“Then why is the present administration saying the country is currently indebted to the tune of some trillions of naira-I think four or so.”
“Hmmn beats me”
“And it is currently planning to borrow some more money from the World Bank, in partnership with some state governments to fund certain ‘developmental’ projects”
“It is a case of seeing less as one inquires more”
“So what’s being done with all our oil money?”
“Don’t you get it; it is used to wash away the stain from oil-soiled hands”
“Definitely not the hands of the great numbers of Nigerians”
“The projects you talked about-will the money be expended on them?”
“Or on bullet-proof cars?”
“Or on the emoluments of public officials?”
“Or on preparations for the upcoming elections?”
“Which ever way we look at it, we maybe in for another round of official posturing on why our national earnings are depleting due to our financial obligations to our creditors”

“What is the population of Nigeria?”
“A conservative estimate puts it at a hundred and thirty million people”
“Good! The government should obtain financial instruments of a million naira for each Nigerian”
“You must be out of your mind! Do you realize that that will amount to approximately a hundred and thirty trillion naira?”
“Look my friend, financial experts will work out the modalities but it could be done in phases; commencing with the employed or unemployed, adults or teenagers and so on.”
“You must be from outer space!”
“Please, see the possibilities-businesses will spring up, the demand and supply chain will be active and the economy will be rejuvenated”
“What you are proposing is a one way ticket to the land of GIGA inflation!”
“Well it should be duly considered! Still on this discussion, I’ll have to talk to the owner of Mama ‘Eat Good’ restaurant, down the street”
“Why?”
“To begin negotiations.”
“Negotiations over what?”
I happen to owe her a substantial amount of money over food and drinks I have consumed”
“And what are you proposing?”
“It is quite simple! For every four bottles of beer I have consumed, I pay for only one while she writes off the cost of all the plates of pepper soup I have taken!”
“What makes you think she will agree to this outrageous deal of yours?”

JOKER OF THE DAY (NIGERIA, EDUCATION)
Only recently, the Federal Executive Council of the Nigerian Government, at the end of one of her weekly deliberations announced plans for the establishment of six new universities, across the six Geo-political zones of the country i.e. one each in the North-west, North-east, North-central, South-east, South-west and South-south zones of Nigeria.
The Federal Government’s position is predicated on the fact that the growing numbers of admission seekers in the country, has far outstripped the capacity of existing higher institutions of learning. Take-off grants have also been approved for the take–off each new university!
A cursory look at this development might elicit feelings of hope and happiness but I believe that fundamental issues affecting education in Nigeria have once again been ignored!
With close to two score federal universities already in existence, most once pristine but now in sorry states due to years of neglect, inchoate and inconsistent policies, under funding and under staffing as well as other germane issues going unaddressed, it will take more than the establishment of new colleges to pull the educational sector from the doldrums! Even as I write this piece, academic staff members of universities run by state governments in the south-eastern part of Nigeria, have been on an industrial action, for four months and counting. And to think that this issue was not even given mention at the Federal meeting smacks of a sinister indifference by the federal Government
I think that common sense dictates that the decay in the educational sector should first be tackled, existing educational institutions and facilities must be upgraded and expanded, the quality and quantity of faculty and related staff shored up in addition to improving conditions of service
In closing and using an analogy, it makes no economic sense adding six new cars to a fleet of automobiles if the cost of such procurement could easily pay for far-reaching repair and maintenance works on the other vehicles, which are still serviceable
ACE OF THE DAY (NIGERIA, SPORTS)
The body charged with the administration of football in Nigeria, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) signaled its intention of breaking free from the past of hiring expatriates, by announcing the engagement of Mr Samson Siasia, as the Head Coach of the Senior men’s national football team; the Super Eagles.
Samson Siasia, himself, a former Nigerian football player, had before now coached the National U-21 and U-23 men’s football teams, achieving second place finishes in both the 2005 U-21 world cup and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In addition to the terms of the contract being juicy, the NFF has pledged to give the new helmsman free rein and offer all the support he will need to succeed, in the task of rebuilding the Super Eagles.
However, the NFF must go a step further. As part of general reforms, all the other coaches of the country’s other national teams(male and female) should also be given formal contractual engagements, that will guarantee the leverage, support and resources needed by them to restore Nigerian football to its glory days of yore!

With close to two score federal universities already in existence, most once pristine but now in sorry states due to years of neglect, inchoate and inconsistent policies, under funding and under staffing as well as other germane issues going unaddressed, it will take more than the establishment of new colleges to pull the educational sector from the doldrums! Even as I write this piece, academic staff members of universities run by state governments in the south-eastern part of Nigeria, have been on an industrial action, for four months and counting. And to think that this issue was not even given mention at the Federal meeting smacks of a sinister indifference by the federal Government
I think that common sense dictates that the decay in the educational sector should first be tackled, existing educational institutions and facilities must be upgraded and expanded, the quality and quantity of faculty and related staff shored up in addition to improving conditions of service
In closing and using an analogy, it makes no economic sense adding six new cars to a fleet of automobiles if the cost of such procurement could easily pay for far-reaching repair and maintenance works on the other vehicles, which are still serviceable
ACE OF THE DAY (NIGERIA, SPORTS)
The body charged with the administration of football in Nigeria, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) signaled its intention of breaking free from the past of hiring expatriates, by announcing the engagement of Mr Samson Siasia, as the Head Coach of the Senior men’s national football team; the Super Eagles.
Samson Siasia, himself, a former Nigerian football player, had before now coached the National U-21 and U-23 men’s football teams, achieving second place finishes in both the 2005 U-21 world cup and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In addition to the terms of the contract being juicy, the NFF has pledged to give the new helmsman free rein and offer all the support he will need to succeed, in the task of rebuilding the Super Eagles.
However, the NFF must go a step further. As part of general reforms, all the other coaches of the country’s other national teams(male and female) should also be given formal contractual engagements, that will guarantee the leverage, support and resources needed by them to restore Nigerian football to its glory days of yore!

NAIJA MATTERS
THE COMMON WEALTH GAMES AND A NATION’S POTENTIAL
As I write this piece, the curtains are being drawn on the XIX Common wealth Games,2010, held in New Delhi India( 4-11th October, 2010). Nigeria obtained a total medals haul of eleven gold, nine silver and fourteen bronze medals respectively, making her the ninth best team overall and the third best African representative behind South Africa and Kenya. In addition, it has to be said that this has been her best performance at the games since her participation at the 1994 edition in Victoria, Canada.
I was privileged to watch some of the events that raked in the medals for us; the weight and power lifters (the latter displayed awesome ability in disability) were simply a delight to watch. They went about their business with such dedication and passion that once again renewed one’s belief in the project called Nigeria. Did I also mention that their emotional and –more often the not- colorful celebration, at each victory, added to the pomp and ceremony of the games and were a focal point of many a discussion?
And this is not detracting from the valiant efforts of the other Nigerians who missed the medals bracket but nevertheless gave it their best shot and were willing to fight another day.
Overall, these sports men and women-the ladies, by the way contributed more gold medals to the total haul- have once again brought to the fore, the potential for success, embedded in the heart and mind of the average Nigerian. We are indeed a great people, with the potential of attaining the status of a great nation. The missing part in the equation is and has always been the dearth of an enabling environment
In the run-up to the Delhi games, a head of one of the sports’ associations in the country, was exasperated that his charges could not embark on a foreign trip for needed exposure and conditioning due to a lack of funds.They had to make do with some contrived camping here on our shores (again, you’d wonder why millions are spent on foreign training trips, when we could easily procure the needed manpower and equipment). In departing for the games, our contingent left in bits and pieces. At the games proper, I observed –and I stand to be corrected- that our participants wore different sports wears and kits, in varying shades of our national colors. In another development, it was alleged that a medal prospect in the sprints; Blessing Okagbare, refused to feature for Nigeria, over some disagreement she had with the nation’s sports administrators. These and many more a sad commentary on our national state of affairs.
However, I would rather focus my energies on policies I believe will bequeath to us desirable results. Beginning with sports and with the Olympic Games London 2012 fast approaching, massive resources should now be geared toward further intensive preparations for our gallant contingent to the Delhi Games and other potential hopefuls. Put aside government’s mantra about private sector funding and the present battle between scarce resources and MANY, MANY competing ends. This is my take on these issues; first to attract private funding to any endeavor, such an endeavour must have garnered consistent accolades and possess enduring structures that are primed for success. Has our sports achieved success over the years and on a consistent basis? Yes, we have achieved relative success and no-not on a consistent basis!
Secondly, a nation that can afford to spend a third of its yearly budget on the salaries and emoluments of public officials and aides (more on this issue at a later time), must as a matter of necessity ,re-prioritize and channel such needed funds to endeavors that will bring visible dividends to the nation, through an avenue such as sports.
On a final note, the feat achieved by these our ambassadors should not go unsung, rather they should , in addition to receiving adequate compensatory packages, be accorded national honors for their exploits, that have put Nigeria in good stead in the sporting arena! The question now is not what the average Nigerian can do for Nigeria but what Nigeria can do for the average Nigerian! All the best!

This poem was inspired by a scene in a movie, where a little girl recited a poem at funeral, in memory of the departed. and it immediately struck a chord in me! PHOTOGRAPHY
A few people have asked why I am fascinated with photography. And I do not blame them, especially when the average photographer can be seen clutching his/her dear equipment and pursuing a desired target, eventually assuming various posture, positions and angles, in the avowed bid to get a shot, a classic study in frenzied chaos, most time
And more often than not, I give this reply- taking pictures gives man the opportunity to go one better than that age long ally and foe- TIME. It is a chance to capture a piece of a moment in time, hold it in your hands and call it your own! Moreover, you will better appreciate this against the backdrop of the fact that Time never seems to cease reminding us, at every chime that it is in a hurry to go, to leave- chastising us for moments lost, congratulating us on those utilized- only to come back repeatedly!
So to capture and frame that smile, frown, kiss, some awkward moment…. and possess that, to me, is as exhilarating and as pulsating as climbing Mount Everest (thank heavens it is my blog).
Overall, it is a great vocation (just ask a professional photographer), a worthwhile pastime (just ask me), a great way to relieve stress, clear the mind and serve as a boost to the creative process. I hope I have written enough to convince a few of you to join the train. If yes, do get a camera and start shooting .And if you remain unconvinced or indifferent, do read this article again (Laffs). Hasta la vista
HOW TO SHOOT GREAT GROUP (AND INDEED ANY OTHER KIND) PHOTOGRAPHS
1. BE PREPARED-
Check that the camera is on, scope out the location before hand, think of positioning people, frame your shot, have extra batteries and so on
2. GET A GOOD LOCATION:
Beware of the background, edges of your image such that the group will fit in the location, where the ground is flat, where there is sufficient light and where there are no distractions in the background!
3. GET CLOSE:
The closer you get, the more detail you will have in their faces-something that really lifts a shot a lot.
Use wide-angle lens if getting close results in cutting off people
4. ARRANGE THE GROUP
Act like a movie director to get a group photo. Take the initiative, be polite, be firm, and be creative in placing people and things
5. BE IN CONTROL
Be firm in directing things; do not let the status of your subjects intimidate you. Always find a polite or even humorous way of telling them what you want them to do
Always keep them in the know and be a great communicator
6. TAKE MULTIPLE SHOTS
Taking multiple shots makes it easier to get the best shots, making selection easier

MY OWN VERY SPACE
Aha! It’s finally here! My very own space, in the boundless vastness of the creative universe, where I hope to make friends, build alliances, pacify foes, ruffle feathers, question the norm, think outside the box, bug curiosity and do everything other thing that typifies the inquisitiveness of the human spirit.
My life’s work is a work in progress, a journey and a destination, without a definite end. However, it will be pragmatic enough to accommodate evolution and innovation and who knows what stops could be on the way (by stops, I mean publishing compilations and compendiums and the like, hopefully from friendly promptings and helpings.)
My blogging will endeavor to be adventurous and explorative, covering such themes and topics ranging from the mundane to the sublime, from politics to business, from social commentaries to sports, poetry and photography (dear hobbies of mine), sports, jokes and everything in-between that is nice and spicy. You could call it a pot-pourri of an assortment of servings, and you will not be wrong!
A curious mind might ask “why the name- jokers and aces?” The name stems from the fact that life is in itself always evolving. Because in many ways, life always reminds us that change is the only universal constant, moving from one state to another and no other species typifies this very pattern more than man himself does. Everyday we are inundated with news items ranging from the most sublime events- major breakthroughs in fields of science and technology, arts and literature and so on, to the basest of the mundane- suicide bombings, wars, and so on! While I do not promise to achieve regularity in my postings, I will endeavor to be real, succinct and pointish (I have a grammar license if you must know!) (laughs)! Therefore, I say to you all- “Come one, come all” and let us embark on this journey together. And as the Chinese curse goes; ‘May you always live in exciting times’
